Honey is produced by the bees. Bees travel as far as 55,000 miles and visit more than two million flowers to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey. Honey is dry, astringent and sweet in taste. The color and flavor of honey differ depending on the bees' nectar source. Honey is primarily composed of fructose, glucose and water. It also contains other sugars as well trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins and amino acids.

  • Honey is specially recommended as the best in Kapha diseases (in ayurveda where phlegm is predominant).

  • Taken early in the morning with equal parts of cold water, Honey is reputed to cure obesity.

  • Mixed with milk and ghee(clarified butter), Honey is very beneficial as a tissue builder.

  • Honey is given to children along with fresh juice of betel leaves as a carminative.

  • Honey is said to posses hygroscopic property which destroys microbes.

  • Contraindications:

  • Though both honey and ghee are used together in most of the cases, still it is advised that both honey and ghee should not be taken in equal quantity.

  • Besides it is also advised not to heat honey as it may cause honey to loose all its useful property.
